Doctoral Researcher/PhD

The position is offered for a period of 4 years, if no former times of qualification must be considered. The starting date is 1st October 2025. The position is part-time (65 % of regular working hours) with salary and benefits commensurate with a public service position in the state Hesse, Germany (TV-H E 13, 65 %).

The position is available within the Research Unit »Weak Elements in Phonology: Development, Processing and Modality«. The Research Unit investigates weak elements such as reduced syllables in language processing and development. The research project being coordinated in Marburg includes colleagues from the Universities of Mannheim, Frankfurt, Mainz and Erfurt and the Leibniz Institutes in Bonn and Mannheim. The project of the current call is concerned with the coordination of the attentional cycle with the patterns of distribution of reduced syllables in spoken language. The project is led by Prof. Alfred Lameli and Prof. Mathias Scharinger and offers exciting interdisciplinary approaches within Variational- and Neurolinguistics.

Tasks:

  • scientific services in research (empirical work, data collection, presentation etc.)
  • realization of a Ph.D.-project within the time of the position
  • actively attending all events of the Research Unit

The position is limited to a time period deemed adequate for the completion of a doctoral degree. As part of the assigned duties, there will be ample opportunity to conduct the independent scientific research necessary for the completion of a doctorate. The limitation complies to § 2, 1 WissZeitVG.

Profile:

  • MSc-degree or equivalent in Linguistics, Phonetics, Psychology, Cognitive Science or closely related disciplines with a discernible linguistic component
  • expertise in Neurolinguistics, Phonetics/Phonology; desired is an interest in Variational Linguistics and/or Dialectology
  • expertise with empirical and neurophysiological linguistic data, desired is knowledge of Electroencephalography (EEG) and linguistic corpus analyses, beneficial is familiarity with oscillatory analyses of EEG- and speech-data
  • independent and thorough scientific way of working, confidence in preparing scientific texts and presentations, and knowledge of statistics
  • good language skills (written and spoken) in German and English (comparable to level “B” of the European reference frame)
  • social competence, willingness for cooperation and learning, high motivation and high levels of resilience

Disposition to own scientific qualification is expected.
