The department of Medicine, Center for Human Genetics, is currently accepting application for a

Research Assistant

The position is full-time with salary and benefits commensurate with a public service position in the state Hesse, Germany (TV-H E 13). The third-party funded project is part of the BMBF research group “PerMed COPD – Personalized Medicine for the Prevention and Treatment of COPD – Prospective Clinical Study and Molecular Biomarkers. An extension is possible if the project is extended.

Tasks:

  • research duties in close collaboration with other groups within the research consortium
  • Biostatistical and bioinformatics analyses of molecular-genetic data to elucidate chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • analysis of genome-wide and methylome-wide association studies (GWAS/MWAS) from large patient cohorts
  • analysis of transcriptome-wide expression data generated by bulk or single-cell sequencing (e.g., 10x Genomics)
  • development of new methods for disease-risk prediction and patient stratification by integrating genetics and other omics datasets 

The position will be filled by a temporary contract that is limited to the period which is necessary to gain further scientific expertise (scientific orientation and project development). Within the entrusted tasks the opportunity for independent scientific work to obtain further personal qualification is given. The limation not based on § 2, 1 WissZeitVG.

Profile:

  • completed academic university degree (Diploma, Master’s, or equivalent) in a natural science (e.g., Biology, Chemistry) or in a quantitatively oriented field (e.g., Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science)
  • proficiency with Unix/Linux clusters (shell/Bash) and strong programming skills in R and/or Python
  • strong interest in the genetic causes of multifactorial phenotypes and in the integration of multi-omics and epidemiological data
  • Doctoral degree (PhD or equivalent) with a focus on applied quantitative analyses of molecular and/or epidemiological data (bioinformatics/biostatistics) is desirable
  • record of publications in peer-reviewed journals is considered an advantage
