The University of Marburg, founded in 1527, offers a variety of excellent programs of study for around 22,000 students and confronts the important topics of our time through excellent research across a broad spectrum of sciences.
The Academy of Sciences and Literature Mainz and the University of Marburg are jointly seeking to fill a six-year fixed-term position in the Department of German Studies and Arts, Institute for Art History, and at the Marburg Center for Digital Culture and Infrastructure (MCDCI) at the earliest possible date as a
The Academy of Sciences and Literature Mainz (ADW) focuses on the implementation of innovative, digitally oriented research projects in the humanities within the framework of the academy program funded by the federal and state governments. The professorship is part of the further qualification initiative of the Gemeinsame Wissenschaftskonferenz and the Union der deutschen Akademien der Wissenschaften.
The University of Marburg has an outstanding profile in the field of digital humanities due to traditional research centers such as the Forschungszentrum Deutscher Sprachatlas and the Deutsches Dokumentationszentrum für Kunstgeschichte – Bildarchiv Foto Marburg as well as several long-term projects funded by the ADW and innovative new initiatives in the field of digital methods and tools. This expertise is focused in the Marburg Center for Digital Culture & Infrastructure (MCDCI).
The professorship will contribute to and expand the existing profile in digital humanities at the ADW and the University of Marburg. The focus should be on the critical development of theory and the practical application of digital technologies for the cataloguing of cultural heritage, the preservation of cultural heritage and the digital preservation of monuments, with a particular focus on the object-related long-term projects of the academy program. The position also includes management tasks in the Digital Academy at the ADW in Mainz.
We are looking for a researcher with a proven track record in the history of architecture, art and culture who can demonstrate comprehensive experience with digital methods and technologies in the museum and heritage sector. The person is expected to actively participate in the Digital Academy and in MCDCI research networks and initiatives as well as in current and future academy projects. We expect proven competencies in the implementation and development of digital methods in relation to cultural heritage data through teaching, projects, publications, event organization and lectures. Experience with citizen science projects in the GLAM sector is beneficial. We are particularly interested in the innovative development of research focused on the examination of non-textual material (e. g. objects, images, videos). Furthermore, the professor is expected to critically engage with the digitization of cultural heritage and demonstrate the ability to critically reflect on digital methods. The necessary knowledge regarding image and object databases, programming languages and software applications in the GLAM field should also be taught. The post holder will teach two hours per week in the Master program “Cultural Data Studies” at the University of Marburg.
This call for applications for the qualification professorship is explicitly aimed at academics in the early stages of their career. The duration of academic activities after obtaining the PhD should not exceed four years. Furthermore, the applicant should not have completed their doctorate at the University of Marburg or should have worked outside the University of Marburg for at least two years after completing their doctorate (Section 64 (3) HHG). The appointment will be based on the Jülich model by means of a leave of absence from the University of Marburg to the ADW. We are looking for an individual with an outstanding academic record and an innovative academic profile that demonstrates the potential for a successful career in academia at the highest international level.
A completed university degree, an outstanding doctorate and particular pedagogical aptitude are required. Experience in the successful acquisition of third-party funds will be considered an asset.
The employment requirements of §§ 67, 68 and especially 70 HessHG apply.
