The Philipps University, founded in 1527, offers multiple award-winning teaching for around 22,000 students and tackles the important issues of our time with excellent research across a broad spectrum of science.

At the Department of Geography, research group on “Soil and Water Ecosystems”, Prof. Dr. Peter Chifflard, a third party funded full time position as a maternity/parental leave replacement is available as soon as possible, limited until 01.02.2024 as a

Research Assistant

to be filled. The position is classified with salary and benefits commensurate with a public service position in the state Hesse, Germany (TV-H E 13, 100 %).

The third-party funded project "Fast and Invisible: Conquering Subsurface Stormflow through an Interdisciplinary Multi-Site Approach", funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), deals with subsurface runoff processes, their identification, quantification and modeling in mid- and high-mountain regions (Link). In the two subprojects "SSF NOVEL TRACERS - Investigation of biogeochemical tracers (environmental and artificial DNA, organic carbon) for the identification of interflow" and "SSF ANGLE - Dynamics and flow paths of interflow in comparison of different slopes" specific questions in the field of soil organic carbon are investigated.

You will have the opportunity to work in an international research group from nine different research institutions, giving you the unique opportunity to build a broad network. Experienced scientists from the fields of geography, biology, soil science, geophysics and hydrology are involved, creating an interdisciplinary working atmosphere.

Tasks:

  • scientific services in research and teaching
  • independent execution of pedological and biological field experiments in the four catchment areas Sauerland (Olpe), Erzgebirge (Dresden), Black Forest (Freiburg), Alps (Innsbruck)
  • hydro-chemical, pedological and biological laboratory analyses
  • processing and statistical analysis as well as visualization of the obtained data

This is a substitution of a qualification position. Since the duration depends on the absence of the person to be substituted, this cannot be linked to a promise of a duration of employment appropriate to the qualification objective.

Profile:

  • completed scientific university studies (diploma, master or comparable) in natural science disciplines (e.g. geography, biology, limnology)
  • doctorate with scientific orientation
  • many years of field and laboratory experience in aquatic and terrestrial organic carbon research
  • experience analyzing large biogeochemical datasets using, for example, R, SQL, Matlab, machine learning, network analysis, PARAFAC, or LOADest
  • good publication activity and experience in obtaining external funding
  • very good oral and written English skills
  • class B driver's license to be able to reach the measurement sites in the individual study areas
  • willingness to spend longer periods in the field in the individual study areas
