Research Assistant (Postdoc)

The position is offered for a period of three years, if no former times of qualification must be considered. The starting date is as soon as possible. The position is part-time (75% of regular working hours) with salary and benefits commensurate with a public service position in the state Hesse, Germany (TV-H E 13, 75%).

Tasks:

• Academic Services in Research
• Planning, coordination, and implementation of field work studies, including seasonal and event-based sampling along the hillslope–riparian–stream-continuum
• Coordination and quality assurance of hydrochemical and biogeochemical laboratory analyses in collaboration with the existing laboratory staff
• Characterization of WSOC/DOC using UV-VIS and fluorescence spectroscopy, as well as EEM/PARAFAC
• Statistical analysis, visualization, and data-driven modeling of biogeochemical datasets, including machine learning
• Analysis and publication of already existing data from the first funding phase as well as newly collected project data
• Participation in an international research consortium and presentation of the results at national and international conferences 

The position involves a significant amount of experimental fieldwork and regular measurement campaigns in mountain and alpine regions of Germany and Austria. Due to laboratory organization and project coordination, regular and predominantly on-site presence at Marburg is required.

The position will be filled by a temporary contract that is limited to the period which is necessary to gain further scientific expertise (such as the preparation for a subsequent qualification period). Within the entrusted tasks the opportunity for independent scientific work to obtain further personal qualification is given. The limitation of the contract complies to Section 2(1) of the German Academic Fixed-Term Contract Act (WissZeitVG).

Profile:

• MSc-degree or equivalent in Environmental Sciences, Geography, Biogeochemistry, Soil Science, Hydrology, or a related field, as well as a completed PhD
• Proven research experience in organic carbon, as well as an excellent record of scientific publications in international, peer-reviewed journals
• profound experience in experimental field research as well as in the planning and coordination of field and laboratory work
• Excellent knowledge of R and extensive experience in statistical data analysis and visualization
• Excellent English skills, the ability to work independently, and strong teamwork skills in an interdisciplinary and international research environment
• Experience with UV-VIS-/fluorescence spectroscopy and EEM/PARAFAC, as well as knowledge of hydrology and experience with Python, machine learning, and data-driven environmental modeling are an advantage

Disposition to own scientific qualification is expected.
