The University of Marburg, founded in 1527, offers a variety of excellent programs of study for around 22,000 students and confronts the important topics of our time through excellent research across a broad spectrum of sciences.

The Faculty of Educational Science, Institute of Educational Science, invites applications for a

Full Professorship (W 3) in Educational Science with a focus on Adult Education / Continuing Education

to be filled by 1st April 2026.

The successful applicant is expected to represent the field of educational science with a focus on adult education, further education and lifelong learning at the Institute of Educational Science. The term "adult education/further education" encompasses learning in public and private institutions (adult education centres and civil and private further education providers) with varying topics (general, political and vocational). Lifelong learning is defined as the acquisition of knowledge and skills through formal, non-formal and informal learning processes, with individuals taking the initiative to direct their own learning throughout their entire lifespan. The field of adult education/continuing education is a key area in the Institute's research and teaching activities.

Tasks:

We require candidates to participate in existing and planned research priorities of the department and the university. These priorities include digitality, inclusion/diversity, and democracy education. The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate leadership skills and national and international networking abilities. They will also be required to provide conceptual input into the department's degree programmes, particularly in the focal areas assigned to the chair and in the development lines within the framework of the department's target agreements. High-quality teaching and supervision of students are prerequisites for this role and should be demonstrated by corresponding evaluation results and/or university didactic qualifications. The professorship is responsible for teaching educational science and will assume responsibility for teaching adult education/continuing education and lifelong learning at Bachelor and Master level. The teaching languages are German and English.

The professorship also involves the scientific leadership of the Centre for Scientific Continuing Education (ZWW) at the University of Marburg.

Profile:

We are seeking a scientifically proven personality to represent adult education/further education in its entirety and with an established profile based on theory-led empirical research (qualitative/quantitative/mixed methods).

The successful candidate will have a proven track record in empirical research, experience in securing competitive research funding, and a willingness to participate in research programmes.

Previous work should include relevant contributions in at least three of the following subject areas:

  • addressees of and participation in adult education/continuing education
  • pedagogical professionalism and professionalisation in adult education/further education
  • learning and didactic behaviour in adult education/further education
  • system and organisation in adult education/further education
  • vocational and in-company further education
  • scientific further education
  • specific fields of action in adult education (e.g. cultural education, political education etc.)

We are looking for a highly qualified, internationally visible scientist with outstanding scientific achievements. We are seeking candidates who can make valuable contributions to theory-led empirical research in adult and further education.

A  MSc-degree or equivalent and a very good relevant doctorate in the field of educational science as well as further academic work with a clear focus on adult education/further education/lifelong learning (also taking into account digital forms of teaching and learning) is required. Additional relevant achievements after completion of the doctorate (habilitation or habilitation-equivalent achievements) are also required. We are looking for someone with a proven track record of nationally and internationally recognised research activities and publications in peer-reviewed journals.

Experience in the sucessful acquisition of third-party funding is a prerequisit.

The employment requirements of §§ 67 and 68 HessHG apply. The University of Marburg attaches great importance to intensive supervision of students and doctoral candidates and expects a pronounced presence at the university from its lecturers.

We offer:

  • the chance to become part of a renowned and future-oriented university
  • ticket for free use of public transport in the state Hesse, Germany
  • family service (holiday care, dual career services)
