The University of Marburg, founded in 1527, offers a variety of excellent programs of study for around 22,000 students and confronts the important topics of our time through excellent research across a broad spectrum of sciences.

The Department of German and Art Studies, Institute of Art History, Prof. Dr. Peter Bell, is currently accepting applications for a

Research Assistant

The position is offered for a period of four years. The time limit depends on the duration of the project. The starting date is as soon as possible. The position is part-time (65 % of regular working hours) with salary and benefits commensurate with a public service position in the state Hesse, Germany (TV-H E 13, 65 %).

The sub-project investigates the constitutive significance of visual antigypsyist stereotypes in figures, motifs and pictorial narratives for the formation of European modernism. Stereotypical motifs from high and popular culture are to be indexed, catalogued, categorized and evaluated in their structural entirety for the first time in order to ensure coherent art-historical analyses on this basis.

The sub-project is also responsible for setting up a multimodal database, i. e. the technical infrastructure of the research group, in which events, works and people are connected.

The sub-project makes it possible to gain a broad knowledge and analytical competence within European visual cultures and at the same time to focus on one or a few regions and genres.

Possible topics, favored by corresponding language skills, would be the Hispanism of English academy painting and identity and difference-creating figures in Spanish painting itself. Graphics and painting of German-speaking secessions and Expressionism. Finally, the visual cultures of Central and Eastern Europe in relation to the nationalization and (thereby) inclusion or exclusion of Roma.
