The Philipps University, founded in 1527, offers multiple award-winning teaching for around 22,000 students and tackles the important issues of our time with excellent research across a broad spectrum of science.

The Department of Medicine, research group on Translational Inflammation Research, Prof. Dr. Mareike Lehmann is currently accepting applications for a

Research Assistant (Doctoral Researcher)

The position is offered for a period of 3 years, if no former times of qualification must be considered. The starting date is as soon as possible. The position is part-time (65 % of regular working hours) with salary and benefits commensurate with a public service position in the state Hesse, Germany (TV-H E13, 65 %).

The central research interest of the group is the investigation of cellular aging mechanisms and their relevance for chronic lung diseases. For this purpose we use human, clinically relevant ex vivo models of the lung combined with the latest (high throughput) analytical methods and imaging techniques. Here we are looking for a PhD student within the newly established Emmy Noether Junior Research Group for the functional characterization of cellular senescence in Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF) and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

  • isolation of human primary cells from the lung
  • identification and analysis of senescent cells in human lung by FACS and single cell sequencing
  • secretome analysis of primary senescent cells (via proteomics)
  • analysis of proteome and transcriptome data
  • functional analyses in different human cell culture models

The position is limited to a time period deemed adequate for the completion of a doctoral degree. As part of the assigned duties, there will be ample opportunity to conduct the independent scientific research necessary for the completion of a doctorate. The limitation complies to § 2, 1 WissZeitVG.

  • MSc-degree or equivalent in life sciences
  • good knowledge of English (oral and written)
  • extensive knowledge and handling skills in common methods from molecular and cell biology
  • experience in handling primary cell culture
  • experience in analyses of (single cell) transcriptome and proteome data is desired

Disposition to own scientific qualification (e.g. a doctorate project in the are of inflammation of the aging lung) is expected.

We actively support the professional development of junior researchers, e.g. by the offers of Marburg Research Academy (MARA), the International Office, the Higher Education Didactics Office and the Human Resources Development Office.
