The University of Marburg, founded in 1527, offers a variety of excellent programs of study for around 22,000 students and confronts the important topics of our time through excellent research across a broad spectrum of sciences.

The Department of Psychology, research group on “Digitalization in Psychological Domains”, is currently accepting applications for a

Doctoral Researcher/PhD

The position is offered for a period of 3 years, if no former times of qualification must be considered. The starting date is as soon as possible. The position is part-time (65 % of regular working hours) with salary and benefits commensurate with a public service position in the state Hesse, Germany (TV-H E 13, 65 %).

The newly established research group Digitalization in Psychological Domains is dedicated to exploring the role of digital technologies such as smartphones and social media in human well-being. Well-being is understood comprehensively—ranging from psychological well-being (e. g. affect, life satisfaction, flourishing) to physiological aspects (e. g. sleep) and social well-being (e. g. loneliness, relationship satisfaction). The group primarily uses research designs and data collection methods that enable real-life studies with high ecological validity and the collection of behavioral data: experience sampling, daily diary studies, or field experiments combined with mobile sensing, digital behavioral traces, and physiological measurements such as actigraphy.

Tasks:

  • conceptualize and conduct independent research in the group’s areas of interest
  • present research findings at national and international conferences and in international journals
  • teach courses and co-supervise students writing their theses
  • write a cumulative dissertation
  • potentially provide additional academic services in research and teaching

The position is limited to a time period deemed adequate for the completion of a doctoral degree. As part of the assigned duties, there will be ample opportunity to conduct the independent scientific research necessary for the completion of a doctorate. The limitation complies to § 2, 1 WissZeitVG.

Profile:

  • a strong academic background with a completed degree in Psychology (MSc-degree or equivalent)
  • an interest in the research topics of the group and enthusiasm for independent scientific work (demonstrated by a maximum 1-page motivation letter in english)
  • excellent written and spoken English skills, as well as at least basic German skills or the willingness to acquire them
  • strong knowledge of quantitative analysis methods and their application in R, as well as an interest in independently expanding and deepening these skills
  • experience with or strong interest in conducting intensive longitudinal studies (e. g. ESM studies) or (field) experiments, as well as in collecting behavioral data
  • programming skills and experience in working with very large datasets are an advantage

Disposition to own scientific qualification is expected.

  • broad opportunities for shaping your role and fostering personal development
  • ticket for free use of public transport in the state Hesse, Germany
  • access to university sports programs and a company pension scheme (VBL - Pension Institution of the Federal Republic and the Federal States)
