The University of Marburg, founded in 1527, offers a variety of excellent programs of study for around 22,000 students and confronts the important topics of our time through excellent research across a broad spectrum of sciences.

The Faculty of Medicine, Department of experimental Ophthalmology, research group of Prof. Dr. D. Pauly (www.paulylab.de), is currently accepting applications for a

Doctoral Researcher/PhD

The position is offered for a period of 3 years. The starting date is as soon as possible. The position is part-time (65 % of regular working hours) with salary and benefits commensurate with a public service position in the state Hesse, Germany (TV-H E13, 65 %).

Are you passionate about cutting-edge research in cellular biology and eager to make a significant impact on understanding retinal diseases?

We are offering an exciting PhD position focusing on the cellular and immunological functions of retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells. These cells are crucial for maintaining the health and functionality of the retina, including recycling photoreceptors and preserving the blood-retina barrier.

Our work aims to unravel the complex mechanisms of RPE cells through a multidisciplinary approach that integrates genetics, molecular biology and protein interaction studies.

We are particularly focused on identifying novel pathways that contribute to retinal degeneration, with a special emphasis on age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a disease affecting millions of elderly individuals globally.

Tasks:

  • include scientific services in research and teaching
  • differentiate and cultivate induced Pluripotent Stem Cells (iPSCs)
  • perform genotyping assays and transcript analysis (qPCR)
  • analyse proteins (Western Blot, ELISA, Immunostaining, Immunoprecipitations)
  • develop research hypotheses
  • collaborate in a small, dynamic team
  • present research findings

The position is limited to a time period deemed adequate for the completion of a doctoral degree. As part of the assigned duties, there will be ample opportunity to conduct the independent scientific research necessary for the completion of a doctorate. The limitation complies to § 2, 1 WissZeitVG.

Profile:

  • Master’s degree or equivalent in a relevant field such as biology, human biology, molecular biology, biochemistry or a related discipline
  • practical experience in described techniques
  • intrinsic motivation and a keen interest in answering complex biological questions
  • strong interest in epithelial cell and complement research
  • excellent problem-solving skills and a passion for innovative research
  • proficiency in English and German, both written and spoken
  • willingness to actively participate in lab life and contribute to routine lab tasks and teaching responsibilities.

Disposition to own scientific qualification is expected.

We Offer:

  • cutting-edge research environment: Work with a team of experts and state-of-the-art techniques
  • professional development: Gain valuable skills through interdisciplinary collaboration and advanced training
  • impactful work: Contribute to research improving the quality of life for millions affected by retinal diseases

We actively support the professional development of junior researchers by the offers of Marburg Research Academy (MARA), the International Office and the Higher Education Didactics Office.
