Research Assistant (Doctoral Reseacher)

The position is offered for a period of 3 years, if no former times of qualification must be considered. The starting date is as soon as possible. The position is part-time (50 % of regular working hours) with salary and benefits commensurate with a public service position in the state Hesse, Germany (TV-H E 13).

The position is in the research group of Prof. Dr. Essen, whose research topics include "Light-triggered conformational changes in biological photoreceptors" and their applications in optogenetics. The project involves the generation of cryptochrome-based optogenetic tools in the model organism Saccharomyces cerevisiae. This project includes the usage of magnetoreceptive cryptochromes for the development of a magnetosensitive yeast


  • scientific services in research
  • research on the development of optogenetic tools in yeasts
  • independent planning, execution and evaluation of experiments
  • summarizing and presenting research findings

The position is limited to a time period deemed adequate for the completion of a doctoral degree. As part of the assigned duties, there will be ample opportunity to conduct the independent scientific research necessary for the completion of a doctorate. The limitation complies to § 2, 1 WissZeitVG.


  • university degree in molecular biology, biochemistry or chemistry (MSc or equivalent)
  • very good knowledge in yeast genetics techniques and good understanding of protein chemistry and/or structural biology
  • very good command of written and spoken English
  • above average academic qualification
  • willingness to work in a multidisciplinary team

Disposition to own scientific qualification is expected.
