The University of Marburg, founded in 1527, offers a variety of excellent programs of study for around 22,000 students and confronts the important topics of our time through excellent research across a broad spectrum of sciences.

The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science invites applications for a

Professorship (W 3) for Practical Computer Science

to be filled by 1st October 2025.

We are looking for a scientist with an outstanding international track record, who strengthens the research focus of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science and actively participates in research networks and initiatives of the department and the Philipps-Universität Marburg. The person to be appointed should preferably have excellent scientific visibility in one or several of the areas Distributed Systems, Computer Networks, and Operating Systems, with a focus on, for example, one or more of the topics scalable distributed data analysis, efficient distributed processing platforms for machine learning, intelligent Cloud and Edge Computing for data-driven networked applications, and resilient communication infrastructures for networked smart sensor systems.

In particular, we are looking for a person with areas of work that create cross-references between the existing working groups and complement the existing range of research areas of computer science in Marburg in a meaningful way. The person sought should also strengthen networking within the department and the university, as well as the Hessian Center for Artificial Intelligence (hessian.AI). Experience in interdisciplinary project work is expected, which shows the potential for cooperation with researchers from other departments and scientific centers of the Philipps-Universität Marburg. The university offers an excellent and open environment for this, e. g. with the departments of biology, geography, medicine, psychology or law as well as with various centers (see https://www.uni-marburg.de/en/research/research-profile/research-centers) and with attractive research profile areas (https://www.uni-marburg.de/en/research/research-profile/profile-areas). Experience in the sucessful acquisition and implementation of third-party funded projects is a prerequisite. In teaching, a regular range of courses in practical computer science is expected, in particular in the areas of distributed systems, computer networks, and operating systems. The courses to be offered are aimed at students in the German-language basic computer science courses in the Bachelor's degree programs, in teaching future secondary school teachers in computer science and in the further development of STEM education, as well as at students in the English-language Master's degree programs of the department.

The employment requirements of §§ 67 and 68 HessHG apply. The University of Marburg attaches great importance to intensive supervision of students and doctoral candidates and expects from its lecturers a pronounced presence at the university. The successful candidate will be expected to teach in German after a maximum of two years of employment.

We offer:

  • the chance to become part of a renowned and future-oriented university
  • ticket for free use of public transport in the state of Hesse, Germany
  • family service (holiday care, dual career services)
