Researcher (Postdoc)

The position is offered for a period of 4 years, if no former times of qualification must be considered. The starting date is 1 October 2025. The position is fulltime (100 %) with salary and benefits commensurate with a public service position in the state Hesse, Germany (TV-H E 13).

We are looking for a highly motivated talent within the interdisciplinary DFG research group "The role of nature for human wellbeing in the Kilimanjaro Social-Ecological System"
(https://gepris.dfg.de/gepris/projekt/428658210). You will be based in Work Package 1 of Subproject 7 to map and model stakeholder demand for Nature’s Contributions to People on Mount Kilimanjaro, using public participatory GIS and social-media analytics to expose demand–supply mismatches in the Kilimanjaro Social-Ecological System.

Tasks:

  • Lead PPGIS workshops in 14 villages in Tanzania
  • Assess and upscale social actors-specific NCP demand
  • Use clustering and deep-learning on social-media data to upscale outputs into high-resolution NCP-demand maps
  • Calculate and link mismatch maps to geolocated household data to test scale- and social actors-specific impacts on well-being
  • Assist in analysis of data-driven scenarios for Nature’s Futures Frameworks
  • Lead and coordinate synthesis work with the other subprojects 

The position is limited to the period which is adequate to the duration of the qualification period. The qualification goal is a habilitation or an equivalent qualification required for a professorship. Within the scope of the assigned duties it will offer the possibility of independent scientific research for further qualification. The limitation complies to § 2, 1 WissZeitVG.

Profile:

  • completed academic university degree (Diploma, Master’s, or equivalent) and a doctorate in Geography, or proof that the doctoral degree will be obtained by the start of the employment
  • very strong skills in remote sensing, geoinformatics and the programming language R
  • advanced GIS & spatial analysis (QGIS/R)
  • Expertise in machine-learning based upscaling
  • familiarity with the research group and its subprojects
  • very good written and spoken English as well as personal motivation for the advertised position
