The University of Marburg, founded in 1527, offers a variety of excellent programs of study for around 22,000 students and confronts the important topics of our time through excellent research across a broad spectrum of sciences.

The Department of Chemistry invites applications for a

Professorship (W1 Tenure Track to W2) in Chemistry Didactics

The Philipps University of Marburg will strengthen and further develop subject didactics in the STEM subjects. Building on an excellent subject-specific education of the students, the subject didactic qualification will be expanded in the network of STEM subjects and by considering so-called cross-cutting issues, as well as being strengthened by innovative subject didactic research.

To this end, the W1 TT to W2 for Chemistry Didactics will be advertised together with a W1 TT to W2 or W2 professorship for Biology Didactics (ZE-0089-W1TTW2-Biologiedidaktik-2024). These two professorships are to network with the other STEM subject didactics to innovatively (further) develop the teaching and research profile of the UMR in STEM didactics and address the cross-cutting issues in teacher education (including inclusion, digitalization, AI in the context of teaching, education for sustainable development, citizen science). The internationalization of teacher education will be systematically advanced at the UMR, in which the subject didactics professorships are also to participate. In addition to subject didactic teaching, the professorships are to conceive didactic teaching/learning offers in close cooperation with the Center for Teacher Education (ZfL) and together with the other natural science subjects (Geography, Physics, Mathematics, and Computer Science) in order to strengthen the subject-specific professionalization of teacher education within the framework of subject didactics. As a prerequisite to foster collaborations with other groups of the individual departments, we expect broad and substantial insight into the basics of the respective subject.

Tasks:

The professorship covers the teaching of chemistry didactics, including modules concerning school-internships, as well as their coordination and further development. The primary focus of the academic work should ideally be on didactic research related to scientific reasoning or scientific literacy, with a connection to the scientific focus areas of the Department of Chemistry. With its chemistry didactic research profile, the professorship should also actively participate in the acquisition of cooperation projects with the subject areas of the department. In addition, the professorship should contribute to interdisciplinary teaching and research development in the STEM subjects and participate in joint project proposals with other STEM subject didactics. An engagement of the chemistry didactics in the Student Research Center Mittelhessen is expected to inspire young people to pursue interests in the STEM fields. The scientific cooperation with the Chemikum Marburg as an extracurricular learning location also offers a special opportunity for research and teaching projects.

Profile:

We are looking for individuals who can present initial independent subject didactic research that is compatible within the respective departments and with the other subject didactics of at the University of Marburg in the STEM area. Your application should demonstrate a clear profile in subject didactic research and teaching through a meaningful research and teaching concept. This should include both subject-specific content (chemistry) and subject didactic concepts for the natural sciences across disciplinary boundaries. Coordinated applications from two individuals applying as a tandem for the two subject didactic professorships in biology and chemistry are also conceivable. In this case, the submitted concepts should be aligned.

Requirements include a completed teaching degree with the subject of chemistry (first and, if possible, second state examination), as well as a subsequent doctorate with a focus on subject didactics. Experience in the successful acquisition of third-party funds will be considered an asset.

The call is explicitly aimed at researchers in the early stages of their scientific careers. The duration of the employment in research and science after obtaining the doctoral degree should not exceed four years. In addition, applicants should not have received their doctorate at the University of Marburg. In case the doctoral degree was ob-tained at the University of Marburg, the applicant should have worked in research and science outside of the University of Marburg for at least two years thereafter (in accordance with § 70 Abs. 3 Hessisches Hochschulgesetz Hess.HG, the State of Hessen Higher Education Act). We are looking for a highly qualified, internationally visible scientist with initial outstanding scientific achievements and an independent scientific profile that demonstrates the potential for a further successful career in sci-ence at the highest international level.

The employment requirements of §§ 67, 68 Hess.HG and especially § 70 apply. The Tenure Track professorship is initially a grade W1 fixed term (6 years) position. If the requirements under general German civil service law are met, the applicant shall be granted a temporary civil service status for a period of six years. In the event of a positive evaluation of the pro-fessional, didactic and personal aptitude, the applicant will be granted a civil service status for life, combined with the assignment of a W2 permanent professorship. Further information on tenure track professorships at the University of Marburg is available at https://www.uni-marburg.de/de/universitaet/profil/berufungskultur/tenure-track.

The University of Marburg attaches great importance to the intensive supervision of students and doctoral candidates and expects from its lecturers and thus from the applicants a distinctive presence at the university and a high degree of commitment in the field of academic teaching.

We offer:

  • the chance to become part of a renowned and future-oriented university
  • ticket for free use of public transport in the state Hesse, Germany
  • family service (holiday care, dual career services)
