Doctoral Researcher

The position is offered for a period of 3 years, if no former times of qualification must be considered. The starting date is as soon as possible . The position is part-time (75 % of regular working hours) with salary and benefits commensurate with a public service position in the state Hesse, Germany (TV-H E 13, 75 %).


  • scientific services in research
  • improvement of the automated classification of fields on the basis of the crops planted in the smallholder regions of Western Kenya
  • automated classification in hyperspectral satellite data from the EnMAP mission of the German Aerospace Center (DLR) using artificial intelligence (AI) in cloud-based process chains of Geo Engine (Geo Engine GmbH)

The research work is being carried out as part of the project "CropHype - Improving crop recognition based on hyperspectral EnMAP data using Geo Engine", which is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection.

The position is limited to a time period deemed adequate for the completion of a doctoral degree. As part of the assigned duties, there will be ample opportunity to conduct the independent scientific research necessary for the completion of a doctorate. The limitation complies to § 2, 1 WissZeitVG.


  • completed scientific university studies (diploma, master's degree or comparable) in the subject of physical geography or similar
  • sound knowledge in the field of remote sensing, machine learning, big data and programming (especially Python)
  • knowledge of the combination of station and satellite data, the processing of large data sets and statistical evaluation methods
  • experience in the field of satellite-based monitoring of agricultural areas is an advantage

Disposition to own scientific qualification is expected.
