The successful candidate will represent the discipline of the Study of Religions at Philipps University, strengthen the LOEWE Center for Dynamics of Religion (https://dynamiken-des-religioesen.uni-frankfurt.de/) with a focus on religious diversity, and participate in the development of the Center of Plural Epistemic Cultures at Department of Social Sciences and Philosophy with a focus on religious knowledge in multiple crises. The professorship is linked to Social and Cultural Anthropology and Empirical Cultural Studies in joint degree programs, which are to be further developed in the future. In addition, the professorship heads the Museum of Religions („Religionskundliche Sammlung“).
We are looking for someone with experience in empirical religious research and a background in the Study of Religions whose profile closely connects to social and cultural sciences with a strong focus on the present. The following areas of expertise are required for participation in the LOEWE Center and the development of the Center of Plural Epistemic Cultures:
A focus on global interconnections and lived religion is preferred. The integration of the Museum of Religions into future research is desirable.
This profile should be demonstrated by relevant, internationally visible publications and, ideally, experience in managing scientific collections. The ability to connect with other disciplines in the department and with centers in which the department is involved (in particular the Center for Near and Middle Eastern Studies, the Center for Gender Studies and the Center for Peace and Conflict Studies) is expected. Two years after taking up the position, knowledge of German at C1 level is required. Experience in successfully acquiring third-party funding is expected, as is the willingness to acquire, design and lead large interdisciplinary research projects.
The conditions of employment are subject to §§ 67, 68 and especially § 70 Hessisches Hochschulgesetz (HessHG). A completed academic university degree with a doctorate and scientific achievements demonstrated through a habilitation or equivalent qualifications are required. The University of Marburg places great importance on the intensive mentoring of students and doctoral candidates; therefore, a regular presence of the teaching staff is required.
