Research Assistants (Doctoral Researchers)

The position is offered for a period of 3 years if no former times of qualification must be considered. The starting date is as soon as possible. The position is part-time (65 % of regular working hours) with salary and benefits commensurate with a public service position in the state Hesse, Germany (TV-H E 13, 65 %).

The work group of Dr. Kurth investigates the metabolism of anaerobic microorganisms, mainly archaea, and combines molecular biology, protein biochemistry, anaerobic cultivation and enrichment methods, but also omics studies to learn more about environmental relevance of specific microorganisms. One research focus lies on the metabolism and environmental relevance of archaea that can metabolize methoxylated aromatics, such as the methane-producing archaeon Methermicroccus shengliensis. The two PhD student projects will be integrated into the research topics of the research group, but can still be individually adapted.

Tasks:

With your tasks, you will become part of the AG Kurth at the new Microcosm Earth Center, which emerged from the cooperation between Philipps-Universität Marburg and the MPI for Terrestrial Microbiology (https://www.uni-marburg.de/en/microcosm-earth). You will be offered a wide range of opportunities for creative and innovative work, for the application of state-of-the art methodology in a variety of scientific disciplines, and for working in a large collaborative network - on an inspiring campus as well as nationally and internationally.

The position is limited to a time period deemed adequate for the completion of a doctoral degree. As part of the assigned duties, there will be ample opportunity to conduct the independent scientific research necessary for the completion of a doctorate. The limitation complies to § 2, 1 WissZeitVG.

Profile:

  • completed scientific university degree (diploma, master's degree or comparable) in microbiology, biology, biotechnology or comparable
  • Experience with microbiological methods (experience in working with anaerobic microbes, protein biochemistry, molecular biology or omics is an advantage)
  • Enthusiasm, good communication and teamwork skills, willingness to learn and desire to develop into an independent scientist
  • good command of English

Disposition to own scientific qualification (e.g. a doctorate project in the area of Microbiology) is expected.
