Postdoctoral Scientist

The position is offered within the frame of the DFG-funded Priority Program 2237 ‘MAdLand - Molecular Adaptation to Land: plant evolution to change’ ( for a period of two years. The starting date is 01.08.2024. The position is fulltime with salary and benefits commensurate with a public service position in the state Hessen, Germany (TV-H E 13).                    

The cytoskeleton forms a highly dynamic network that plays integral roles in coordinating growth and developmental processes. Our preliminary work has identified a plant-specific class of scaffold proteins, the IQ67 Domain proteins, which mediate the assembly of macromolecular complexes and the integration of calcium signals at the microtubule cytoskeleton (see Kumari et al., Nat. Plants 7, 739-747, 2021; Yang et al., New Phytol. 235, 1096-1110, 2022). The aim of the project is (i) to functionally characterize IQD proteins in the liverwort Marchantia polymorpha, and (ii) to investigate the origin and formation of IQD-assembled protein interaction networks through comparative studies in streptophytic algae, mosses, ferns, and flowering plants. This research seeks to unravel the molecular and evolutionary mechanisms that facilitated the neofunctionalization of the cytoskeleton during the terrestrialization of plants, significantly contributing to the success of modern-day land plants.

The position will be filled by a temporary contract that is limited to the period which is necessary to gain further scientific expertise (such as the preparation for a subsequent qualification period). Within the entrusted tasks the opportunity for independent scientific work to obtain further personal qualification is given. The limitation of the contract complies to § 2 Abs. 1 WissZeitVG.


  • MSc and PhD-degree or equivalent in Biology, Biochemistry or a closely related field
  • advanced experience with molecular biology (Cloning, yeast two-hybrid assays)
  • excellent knowledge in cell biology, especially in confocal laser scanning microscopy
  • hands-on experience with plants (preferably Marchantia polymorpha) and bacteria/yeasts in sterile cultures
  • strong communication and teamwork skills, with excellent proficiency in spoken and written English
